25.11.19 / 01 / the great animal orchestra

The Great Animal Orchestra is a visualisation of the natural soundworld in various locations around the world. The projection rolls in horizontal lines like a stave across the walls. As animals and birds are heard on the soundtrack, their acoustic signature appears on the walls. It is possible to see the unique 'shape' of each call, and that they interlock but don't overlap. Each species finds its own location and pattern in the spectrum so that it is heard distinctly by its own kind.

The recordings were made over several decades by musician and bio-acoustician Bernie Krause. Tragically many of the locations are now silent or largely so, due to human interference.

The last events of Blade Runner took place today - according to a reference in Blade Runner 2049. No specific dates in November 2019 are given in the original film. As usual we ponder the differences between an envisaged future of almost 40 years ago and the real present - no replicants or space colonies, no flying cars, but we have mobile phones!
