20.11.17 / 01 / fx101 in cumbria
After Future Present, I sent my presentation to Richard Passmore whose work had inspired it. He invited me up to present it at his FX101 event in Kendal on 18th November 2017. This was a year ahead so I had time to create an expanded version, and also do Moo cards of some of the slides to give away.
I had to do the workshop twice. Someone was critical, saying it was all fine for a city but wouldn't work with rural chapels where nothing could be changed inside. But I know about that kind of building, because I grew up in the country visiting old churches by bicycle. So I said, what could you do with music (or even sound art) and lighting? Even filling a building with flowers as a surprise, for the scent? And somebody said, we did that and it was amazing, and then people were thinking up all sorts of possibilities that didn't need a faculty, and the critical person had a lightbulb moment. Phew! And most of the little cards went, so I felt that it had succeeded.
It was my first time in the Lake District. The weather was so bad I couldn't go outside without waterproof trousers - which all the locals have! The day after the conference I came down with flu - we drove to various sights which were half-hidden in the rain. I could barely get out of the car. Back at Richard and Lori's place we watched Nigella (I didn't think Richard was the sort of person who would watch Nigella!). She used a little grater for garlic instead of a press, and I've used that trick ever since.
