11.12.89 / 01 / chase
Note: Chase up bailiffs.
14.11.89 / 01 / appointment
The diary says 'bailiff at [my old address]'. Not clear what happened - I think the landlord may have been absent so we had to try again.
25.10.89 / 01 / warrants
Warrants issued for the return of my possessions. Note: In couple of weeks see if progress made. Bailiffs will set appointment for return of goods - I must go round with them.
29.09.89 / 01 / appeal
The landlord appealed but was not successful.
17.09.89 / 01 / cleethorpes
9th-17th September in Grimsby and Cleethorpes visiting as many of my relatives as I could. I had decided to photograph them all, which they put up with in a bemused way. Now I'm glad I did it.
30.07.89 / 01 / second move
Second move this year.
22.07.89 / 01 / well dressed
Note to self: Jacket from Higgins - wear denim shirt and chinos to try on. Higgins was a really good independent menswear shop. A lot of their stuff was unaffordable but I managed to get some very good items - essentially work-oriented, smart casual you might say but less 'dead' than that sounds. I did buy the jacket. I was better dressed for work at this point than ever before or after, it was comfortable and I liked it. I would have carried on indefinitely, would happily wear those outfits now, but fashions change, items can't be replaced the same, and you have to figure out all over again what works.
11.07.89 / 01 / design museum opening party
The Design Museum's opening party in their converted warehouse at Shad Thames. Members only - like many I had joined beforehand as soon as membership was available. This would be the source of many parties and much fun in the decade to come.
xx.xx.89 / 01 / can a cad system free us?
I made a lot of Filofax notes on how we can get more work, of kinds that we would like as opposed to just whatever we could get. We must have been discussing it at the time. Before the internet it was hard to advertise what you did to potential clients. You couldn't just make a website or an Instagram feed and let search engines bring them. My list goes:
- Recommendations from existing clients (word of mouth)
- RIBA lists - clients just looking for an architect - sticking a pin in a page
- Competition win
- Publicity - accidental - media pick up on a competition placing or built scheme
- Publicity - send material to magazines
- Approach potential clients
Also the following:
At this point none of us had experience of CAD systems. The answer, sadly, turned out to be no.
18.05.89 / 01 / trial
The actual trial. I prosecuted my own case without a lawyer, and won. Architects have legal training, and I had found it interesting. In later years I was quite good at contractual letters.
10.05.89 / 01 / second hearing
Second hearing 9th-10th May. This time with the defendant. Unpleasantness. My father came to support me.
09.04.89 / 01 / move
First move of lodgings this year.
15.02.89 / 01 / first hearing
First hearing. The defendant didn't turn up so the magistrate found in my favour. Easiest court case ever. However this got set aside.
10.01.89 / 01 / pre-trial review
Pre-trial review.
